Passion and interest – the key to business success
I just want to write a quick note on how important I believe it is to start a business in a sector that you are passionate about. Don’t just jump on the latest band wagon or follow the latest trend. Go for something you love. It will pay off – literally. Passion and interest – the key to business success? Many people, including myself, believe it is – it’s certainly a solid platform from which to build a successful business.
When deciding to start a business or go freelance, make sure you are doing something that you are interested in, and something that is true to you. Sounds obvious, but over the years I’ve met countless people busting a gut over a business that they have no interest in. I’ve been guilty of it myself.
The same applies really, when looking for a role within an existing business (if you want to increase your experience before going it alone). Too often I meet people who say “I’m a project manager” yet they don’t seem to have put any thought into what they actually project manage. They find themselves project managing the launch of a new range of toilet cleaners, yet outside work they love football, travel, and photography. If you have project management skills, and you love football, how about writing to all the football related businesses out there and try and get a role within a football related company. “Aww that will never work…” you cry. Try it. If you can combine your skills with something you are actually passionate about, you’ll find yourself in a virtuous circle of fun and success – and the best bit is that is then your job – you get out of bed on Monday morning to go and discuss football… and get paid for it.
The point I’m making still applies to starting a business or going freelance. Find something you are interested in and passionate about. Generally, if you are interested in, and passionate about something, you’ll be very knowledgeable about it. Combine that with your business skills and you’ll have a winning formula. You’ll be highly motivated without needing to do 10 minutes of power moves every hour, and you’ll end up with sales, good reviews, profit, freedom, fun, and fulfilment.
I mentioned being true to yourself too. If you want to start a company, and can’t sell, it doesn’t matter, providing you can find a great sales person to join you. If you are shy find someone outgoing to network for you and speak at conferences. If you can’t code, team up with a great programmer. One business success formula is to find a business in a sector you are passionate about, identify your skills and the role you wish to play, then build a team to fill the gaps. However, if you don’t want a team, preferring to live and die by your own sword, then come up with a business that allows you to do just that. That last thing you want to do is build a team, if you really don’t like working in teams and love to work alone.
So, passion and interest – the key to business success? Yes, I really do believe it is. The adage “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life” couldn’t be more true.
